June 2025 Update

Big news for our WatchMaker community! Following the exciting announcements at Google I/O, we're thrilled to confirm that the complete WatchMaker experience is being optimized for the newest generation of Wear OS devices with the upcoming Wear OS 6. For more in-depth information, click here.

Our primary focus remains on delivering full support for the new watch face format introduced with the latest Wear OS watches. We're actively developing a significant update and anticipate sharing it with you very soon—so stay tuned!

In the interim, we've already converted a curated selection of our most popular and distinctive watch face designs to the new format. These are now available for you to experience on the latest Wear OS watches! You can access them directly within the WatchMaker mobile application when connected to a compatible device. Currently, downloading each face will direct you to its individual application listing on the Google Play Store.

Why does my new Wear OS watch not support all WatchMaker faces?

Google's recent policy changes mean that new Wear OS 5 watches, such as the Pixel Watch 3, Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, no longer support WatchMaker watch faces. These devices only allow watch faces created using Google’s “Watch Face Format”.

Why Doesn’t WatchMaker Use the Watch Face Format?

The Watch Face Format isn't compatible with WatchMaker for several reasons:

  • Limited Functionality: The format lacks features supported by WatchMaker, so converting watch faces would reduce their functionality.
  • Publishing Constraints: Watch faces in this format must be published via the Google Play Store, a time-intensive process unsuitable for WatchMaker’s huge catalog of 100,000 faces.
  • Purchase Conflicts: Faces purchased in WatchMaker wouldn’t transfer to Google Play, forcing users to repurchase them.
  • Subscription Issues: The format doesn’t support subscription models, so WatchMaker VIP subscribers would lose access to their faces.

In short, the Watch Face Format isn’t yet designed to accommodate a platform like WatchMaker. While discussions with Google have been ongoing since the format's announcement, the rollout of WearOS 5 occurred before a technical solution was available for watch face apps like WatchMaker.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • Wear OS 4 or Earlier: If your watch uses Wear OS 4 or an older version, nothing changes. You can still enjoy WatchMaker’s extensive catalog, even if your watch updates to Wear OS 5.
  • Upgrading to Wear OS 5 Watches: If you switch to a Pixel Watch 3, Galaxy Watch7, or Galaxy Watch Ultra, you’ll lose access to WatchMaker and all previously purchased watch faces or subscription benefits.

What’s Next?

WatchMaker has been a key part of the Wear OS ecosystem since its launch in 2014. Over the years, the platform has grown to serve 10 million users with a catalog of over 100,000 watch faces. Despite these changes, WatchMaker remains committed to supporting Wear OS in every way possible.

For users of Wear OS 5 devices, the WatchMaker team is working closely with Google to bring the platform’s services to you. In the meantime, we will publish many WatchMaker watch faces on the Google Play Store and offer exclusive access to our users.
