meaning Fool, was invented in Italy in the 1400s. It was claimed to have divinatory power only in the 18th century, supposedly based in part on the Qabbala. Such an Esoteric Tarot deck has 78 cards, 21 unsuited numbered cards, plus the unnumbered Fool, together constituting the Major Arcana. The other 56 cards come in 4 suits of 14 cards each, constituting the Minor Arcana.
