Wear OS 6 & Watch Face Format Changes

If you've recently updated your watch or got a new one and noticed some watch faces look different, you're not alone. Google has introduced a new Watch Face Format (WFF) as part of Wear OS, and it affects all watch face apps — not just WatchMaker, but also Facer, Pujie, TimeFlik and others.

What happened?

Google now requires all watch faces to use their new Watch Face Format. This is a platform-wide change that applies to every watch face app on the Play Store.

The new format improves battery life and performance, but it also means some advanced features from the old format are no longer available yet:

  • Live scripting & custom formulas
  • Stopwatch & timer functionality
  • Calendar data on the watch face
  • Interactive charts & gauges
  • Some dynamic & interactive elements

Do I need to upgrade?

Yes, we recommend upgrading. Google is enforcing the new format across Wear OS, and older watch faces will eventually stop working on updated watches. Upgrading ensures you continue to receive security updates, new watch face designs, and the best compatibility with WatchMaker going forward.

We understand it's frustrating to lose features you relied on. The good news is that these limitations are on Google's side, and as they expand what the new format supports, we'll bring those features back to WatchMaker.

What still works?

The vast majority of watch face features work great with the new format:

  • Weather, temperature & conditions
  • Heart rate & step count
  • Sunrise & sunset
  • Battery level
  • Date, day, time zones
  • Animations & transitions
  • Complications
  • Thousands of watch faces in the WatchMaker library

What about my existing watch faces?

Watch faces you've previously purchased or synced are still in your WatchMaker account. Many have already been updated to work with the new format, and designers are continuing to update more. If a specific watch face hasn't been updated yet, it may not display correctly on Wear OS 6+.

What's next?

We've been actively building for the new format and are committed to making WatchMaker the best watch face platform. We're also expanding capabilities in WatchMaker Studio, our desktop editor for creating powerful watch faces within the new format.

If you have feedback about the new Watch Face Format, you can share it directly with the Wear OS team via Google's support channels.
