Tombac, Canada War Nickel, 1942.
Canada needed to save nickel for the WWII war effort. The V on the reverse of the 1943 is both
for Victory and for the Roman numeral 5. The 1942 still had the prewar design. The U.S. needed to save copper in 1943 so the 1943 penny was made of zinc plated steel.
Tombac is a reddish brass metal with a higher copper and lower zinc content than standard brass, derived from the Malay/Indonesian tembaga meaning copper.
Text, reverse and obverse alternate every 20 seconds.
