The city of Chichen Itza, in Mexicos Yucatan peninsula, was founded by Mayans in the 5th century CE but its architectural masterpieces that earned it a UNESCO World Heritage title were likely produced after its conquest by Toltec invaders from the north. The most famous of these is El Castillo aka the Temple of Kukulkan, on the obverse of the coin.
