Gilded Bronze, Axum, Joel, 550 CE

The gilding is a unique feature of Axum copper alloy coins, probably for esthetic or symbolic reasons since the minute amount of gold plating did not add to their monetary value.

Obverse, apparently clockwise on the right I O and Counterclockwise on the left, E L. Reverse, possibly IOEL in Geez script.
