The obverse, Grimuald, Duke Arechiss son, given as hostage to guarantee the submission of the Dukes Duchy of Benevento in Italy to Charlemagne.

The reverse in the Byzantine style dates the coin to 786 CE when Charlemagne was still readying for the marriage of his daughter Rotrude to Irenes son Constandine VI.
